Undergrad Awards Ceremony
Tuesday, October 28
UTS proudly celebrates student achievement across all grades at our annual Undergrad Awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 28. Each year, thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents, students and friends, UTS recognizes achievement in many areas of school life. The nomination process opens each May: students may self-nominate for up to three awards, and UTS staff may also submit nominations. Endorsed nominations are reviewed by awards committees, which select recipients using our guiding principles, established criteria and academic achievements in UTS coursework. We look forward to honouring the 2024–25 Undergrad Awards recipients with their families and donors next week.
UTS Halloween Costume Guidelines
Halloween is a time for fun, and we want all students to enjoy this occasion! To ensure a positive experience for everyone, please adhere to the following guidelines when selecting a costume for school.
Students are prohibited from dressing in costumes that:
Use attire associated with any ethnic, racial or cultural identity.
Include political messages and symbols.
Promote or depict stereotypes of any group's political, ethnic, racial, gender, sexual or cultural identity.
Mock the identity of any ethnic, political, racial, gender, sexual or cultural group.
Involve altering one's skin colour to represent another racial, political, ethnic or cultural group.
Feature religious or spiritual symbols.
Include replica weapons of any kind.
Wear full face masks or coverings that obscure the entire face as part of a costume.
Not every situation can be anticipated. We ask that students centre kindness, empathy and common sense in their decision-making for costume choices. If you have doubts, it is better to err on the side of caution and not wear it.
Thank you for your cooperation.

What’s been happening at UTS recently….
Echo Chamber Toronto + UTS
The UTS Music and Drama Department is thrilled to welcome Echo Chamber Toronto, led by UTS alum Aaron Schwebel ’06, for a creative residency this year. This exciting partnership connects our students to real-world artistic practice while celebrating creativity, collaboration and community.
Echo Chamber’s new show for young audiences, The Great Canadian Road Trip takes an imaginative “musical road trip” across Canada. Through workshops, open rehearsals, masterclasses and creative sessions, students are engaging in the creative process with artists and getting an authentic look at how a professional production comes to life.
Last week, over 100 students were involved in two inspiring days of music and theatre-making: a masterclass featuring M3 students Ryan and Andrew performing Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata, and M4 Christie and Andrew performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, followed by an open rehearsal where our students became the first audience for the work in progress.
What an incredible start to this partnership ‒ stay tuned for more updates!
Global Ideas Institute 2025-26 launch
What if you only had running water in your home for two hours, once every eight or nine days? That is the reality for some people living in the city of Tiruppur, India, said Dr. Nidhi Subramanyam, an assistant professor of geography and planning at the University of Toronto, and the keynote speaker at last night’s opening of the Global Ideas Institute in our Withrow Auditorium. Her keynote provided vital perspective for this year’s challenge: How can we develop simple, low cost solutions to improve access to safe drinking water globally in communities where it is currently unavailable?
This year, 37 teams from 28 schools (including one from our school), with the support of 75 University of Toronto student mentors, are taking part in the Institute, which is a program of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, in partnership with UTS and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
They will work in their teams to devise innovative solutions to this challenge, and present their ideas at a symposium in the spring. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!
Fore! UTS students bring home stellar OFSAA Championship Golf Results
Our congratulations to Jessica, Stella, Grace and Dawson for performing exceptionally well and representing UTS at the highest level for high school golfers in Ontario. All students competed formidably, with Dawson winning gold.
RBC EmpowerHer
S5 and S6 students Abbie, April, Jessica, Jessica and Rachel traveled to the city’s financial district to attend RBC’s annual EmpowerHer event. The event is an opportunity for young women in grades 11 and 12 to connect with RBC employees to learn about a career in finance and business and a chance to practice their networking skills. Students enjoyed a tour of the Capital Markets trading floor before the networking portion of the event, which included a one-on-one lunch with a female RBC leader. It was an informative and inspiring day!
