Supporting Your Teen with Emotional Regulation

Parenting teens can be difficult, particularly when we are trying to connect with them while they are expressing strong emotions. Though this experience can be frustrating, this is normal as the teen brain is still developing and they are continuing to learn how to manage emotions during this stage in their lives.

Research has shown that it is important to regulate your own emotions prior to responding and supporting someone else's needs. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention offers this resource titled Tips for Coaching Teens to Recognize and Manage Emotions for parents to help navigate these challenging moments. Fostering emotional regulation skills can help children effectively cope with stress and decision making. The article provides thoughtful ideas to practice with your child at home when you may notice big emotions showing up.
